My Wee Apartment

Tuesday, 21 May 2013

San Francisco is notorious for having a ridiculously-priced cost of living. Apartments also tend to be small {I call them quaint, it sounds better}. My apartment is no different. We have a small one-bedroom in one of the newer San Francisco neighborhoods and even though it’s pretty compact, we have tried to add details to make our place fee like home.

Here is a look around my apartment.

image

// I added some brightly colored throw pillows to our hand-me-down couch. Pops of color are nice to offset the foggy atmosphere in the city.

// We bought {and I put together} a tall and slim book shelf. It doesn’t take up a lot of room, but we are able to display photos, books, and cutesy decorative items. I love our mosaic candle and little bird cage.

// I hung up five strings of yarn along one wall where I like to display our cards. Our families are big on sending cards for special occasions {and just to say I Love You}. I like to be able to look at them every day. I like change them out every once in a while as we receive more cards {and I’m a firm believer in still sending greeting cards to loved ones}.

image

// I love my graduated lidded jars. I keep things in there that I use most frequently {powdered sugar, white sugar, flour, and pasta}. We have to use our counter space wisely because our kitchen is rather small.

// I put some pretty decorations in the bathroom. I love to look at my “relax” sign in the morning; it’s a good way to start my day. I also love to light candles to add a warm ambiance to my home.

// These lantern lights were hung all around our wedding reception. I kept a couple strands to hang in the bedroom. These are nice to plug in while we watch a movie and remind me of our very special wedding day.

We are just renters so we aren’t allowed to paint or change the floors so I try to keep personal touches and decorations all around the apartment.

Home is where the heart is.

How To Write An Email

Monday, 20 May 2013

My idea for this post emerged from a rather frustrating week of having to read {way too many} bad emails. I am constantly checking my multiple email accounts and I have found that I am much more responsive to well-written and professional-sounding emails. I get rather annoyed having to read emails that sound like text messages.

So I present to you,

You may not find this useful, but I hope that you take a few of these notes to heart. :]

1 :: First, start with a good subject line. This should be short but include the relevant information so that the person reading knows exactly to what the email is pertaining. For example, “Biology 302 Question” would be a good subject line if you are writing to a professor. Another effective subject line could be “Request for Meeting on June 3rd, 2013” if you are trying to arrange a meeting with someone. You get the picture. The idea is to let the reader know what to expect in the email but not be so wordy that it takes up several lines.

2 :: Include a proper salutation. THIS IS KEY. You can grab the attention of the recipient if you address him or her respectfully and professionally. Even if you are writing to a friend or family member, including a nice salutation is very important. I might say, “Good morning Dr. Anderson” or “Hello classmates and colleagues” to convey an inviting tone. You took the time to compose the email, therefore you want the person to read the entire thing. This starts with a good greeting. Also address the person as Mr./Ms./Dr., unless you know that you are on a first-name basis with that person.

3 :: Start with a light or complimentary sentence. Although you don’t want to send unnecessarily wordy emails, you don’t want to go right into your request as it may sound demanding. I usually start with something along these lines, “I hope that you have been enjoying the beautiful weather we’ve been having” or “I really enjoyed your lecture this morning in Biology 302”. If you are emailing after business hours, start with a simple “I apologize for the late hour of this email” or “I hope this doesn’t inconvenience you”. It’s better to be overly-formal in an email than informal.

4 :: Write the body of the email. Try to keep this short and sweet. As someone who gets 30+ emails per day, I zoom through reading them and I will not spend too much time reading the lengthy emails until I have more time. As a reader, I want to know what you are trying to say in as few sentences as possible. If you need to convey more information, have a small first paragraph that summarizes everything then go into more detail in subsequent paragraphs. Just make sure to have the key information right in the beginning.

5 :: Close the email. Usually this sentence should allow the reader know that he/she can contact you or ask any follow-up questions. I usually say, “I look forward to hearing back from you” or “If you have any questions, please contact me.” You want the recipient to feel part of the conversation.

6 :: Use a proper valediction. You want to end an email as you started: respectfully. This can be really simple. You can close with, “Sincerely,” “Best,” “Respectfully”, or “Thank you”. Don’t just sign your name.

7 :: Include a signature. If you have been emailing the person back and forth, or if this person knows you well, you can include just your name. But if the person receiving your email may not know who you are or if you are writing a business/professional email, you will want to include a signature. It’s easy to set up signatures in your gmail/iMail/etc to be included in every email from that account.

Mine is set up to say:
My name
My school and graduation date
My contact information

{I might also include my leadership position if my email relates to that organization.}

Additional hints :: Make sure that there is a valid address for the recipient. Make sure you spell check and grammar check {please!}. CC the proper individuals if necessary.

I hope that you have found this useful! If you have any ideas for my next “How to” post, please leave a comment!

Have a great week everyone!

Stop by tomorrow for a look around my wee, little apartment.

Q:How do you think I should ask to job shadow? I want to learn more about dentistry and see if I'd be interested in pursuing it, but I'm extremely shy and I really don't know what I would do at all if I go to ask. I mean, should I dress up just to ask them? What should I say? Are there patient confidentiality rules that will cause some dentists to say no? Please help!

Anonymous

I was nervous at first. But once you start, you will notice that it is really easy and most dentists are completely on board with letting you shadow.

I searched for dentists near me and called them. I asked if the dentist was available to speak and if he/she wasn’t I left a message with the receptionist. I asked if I would be able to shadow him/her because I am an aspiring dental student. Tell them a bit about yourself (grade, school, major). Most receptionists can ask the dentist right there and set up a time and some may call you back.

Don’t feel badly if they don’t contact you, they are really busy. Call back in a week! :] I’m sure that you will find a great place to shadow.

In terms of the confidentiality issue, the dentists that you shadow will not have an issue with you shadowing. It’s a very common practice. You will just not be able to talk about a patient or share any of their information (common sense stuff). Most patients don’t mind having you shadow their dentist but some will, but that’s okay because you will get a lot of experience.

You will want to dress in business attire when you first shadow them and if they prefer scrubs they will tell you. But NO jeans and NO t-shirts and ALWAYS wear closed-toe shoes. :]

I hope you find someone to shadow. Most dentists are very open to shadowing because they all did it themselves at some point. :]

Q:Where can I start with making a list of dental schools I should apply to?? Is buying the ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools 2013 useful?

Anonymous

I know this probably won’t sound too helpful — but Google it! I found a lot of good information just searching online. I thought about where I would actually consider living and searched dental schools near there. I compiled a list of schools that were my “reach schools” and “safety schools” based on my stats. I think that a guide like the ADEA one would be helpful if you want to see all that information compiled in one place.

Just think about what you find important. Do you want a place that has grades and class rank or pass/no pass? Do you want to go somewhere with a strong research reputation or more of a clinical reputation {or a combo of both}? Do you want to go somewhere which the medical and dental students take classes together or separate? This is all great information to consider and easily found online.

Good luck!

At the moment

Saturday, 18 May 2013

Celebrating // Seeing my first patient in dental school! Everything went very well and I’m so excited about starting the next steps of my dental education!

Wearing // Scrubs. I am assisting a 4th year dental student today and tomorrow as he takes the WREBs {Western Regional Examining Board} to get his dental license! I will be taking this {killer} exam in only two short years. Yikes!

Watching // Friends. I got all 10 seasons in a boxed set as a gift for my high school graduation and I decided to re-watch the series. :] {I’ve seen every episode at least 20 times}

Drinking // So much coffee. I haven’t been sleeping well lately and I have been needing a coffee IV every morning.

Loving // All the love and support from my readers. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy interacting with all of you and I hope that you continue to love my posts as much as I love writing them.

Happy weekend! And congratulations to all the graduates out there!

Do It Right Now

Friday, 17 May 2013

One of my favorite vocalists/musicians/people ever is Ingrid Michaelson. She is so talented and stays true to herself in her music. I was listening to her newest album Human Again the other day and I felt that one song in particular spoke to me. I feel like she is trying to say that we shouldn’t wait for anyone else to make our happiness; we have to make it for ourselves. We have to get up off our butts, stop feeling sorry for ourselves, and live.image

Do It Now // Written by Ingrid Michaleson

Sitting in the back of the bus

Talking about nothing, oh we’re talking about us
Watching as the world goes hammering on
Hammering on

You say that you’ve got nothing left
There’s nothing left in you to find
You’re gonna ride it out gonna wait it out
Living to die, you’re living to die

No one’s gonna wait for you
No one’s gonna wait for you

So do it now
Do it right now
Don’t waste a minute on the darkness and the pity sitting in your mind and
Do it right now
Do it right now

Everything will stop on a dime
Everything will crash into itself in good time
Do you want to beat your own heart beat your own heart
Or leave it behind
Leave it behind

No one’s gonna wait for you
No one’s gonna wait for you

So do it now
Do it right now
Don’t waste a minute on the darkness and the pity sitting in your mind and
Do it right now
Do it right now

I’m gonna get up I’m gonna get right out of my bed, get out of my bed
You’re gonna stand up, you’re gonna stand right up again stand right up again
I’m gonna get up I’m gonna get out of my bed, get out of my head
You’re gonna stand up, you’re gonna stand up
You’re gonna stand up
You’re gonna stand up

So do it now
Do it right now
Don’t waste a minute on the darkness and the pity sitting in your mind and
Do it right now
Do it right now

What are you going to do with your life right now?

Hard At Work In The Dental School Hive

Thursday, 16 May 2013

I haven’t done a dental post in a while {jeez} so I wanted to share with you some of the things that I’ve been working on!

1 // An all-ceramic crown. I milled this crown from a small porcelain block using CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design, Computer-Aided Manufacturing). I prepared the tooth, scanned it using a special camera, designed the crown on my laptop, and a machine milled the exact design. I then stained and glazed the freshly-milled crown to make it look more natural. This technology is very exciting!

2 // A temporary bridge. We were instructed to “replace #13” which is the upper left second premolar. I prepared the two adjacent teeth and then fabricated a temporary bridge. I was quite pleased with the results. Bridges {aka fixed partial dentures} take a lot of work!

3 // My first denture! We spent weeks preparing this case; we set teeth, created the base out of wax, and then sent it to the lab! We just got our cases back and we had to trim and polish our finished work. Shiny eh?

4 // A cosmetic wax design for the upper incisors. I took impressions of a classmate, mounted her upper and lower casts, and designed a veneer out of white wax on the casts. Usually, a dentist would use this wax-up cosmetic design to do fabricate either direct composite veneers or milled veneers from a lab. She was happy with how it turned out.

Dental school is very exciting right now. I am doing a lot more complicated dental work in the simulation lab and I am preparing to transition into the clinic floor full-time. I see my first {real} patient tomorrow for an oral exam and a cleaning. I am nervous-excited! Wish me luck!
